Two National Initiatives

The Canadian Centre for Gender and Sexual Diversity was established to support and empower work happening on a collaborative and/or collective level between and within territories, provinces, and nations of peoples such as Canadians, First Nations, Inuit, and Métis.

We would like you to join us with two upcoming national initiatives:

Initiative 1: Letter of Support for Bill C-16: An Act to Amend the Human Rights Act and Criminal Code

With the federal government re-introducing legislation to protect gender identity & gender expression, we would like to invite you to sign this community letter that will be delivered to Parliamentarians and Senators on September 19, 2016-the first day of session.

To add your name to the community letter, send an email with how you want your organization presented on the letter to:campaign@ccgsd-ccdgs.org by August 10th.

We the undersigned hereby affirm that we stand in support with Bill C-16, the bill introduced on May 17th 2016 by The Honourable Jody Wilson-Raybould that will guarantee legal and human rights for trans people throughout Canada. Bill C-16 will update the Human Rights Act and Criminal Code to now include gender identity and gender expression, ensuring protection and safety for all trans people. Though similar bills have appeared in the past this is the first time it is a government bill, giving it a higher chance of passing through the House of Commons and the Senate.

Trans people in Canada are diverse individuals who experience unique and specific forms of oppression that are not protected under the current Human Rights Act and Criminal Code. Including gender identity and gender expression are more specific to trans people than other factors that are currently covered such as sex.

Though different provinces have already included gender identity and expression into their Human Rights Commissions this would be the first time a federal bill of this nature would be passed.

We the undersigned stand with the trans community of Canada, whether as members or allies, and in support of Bill C-16 and the safety, comfort, and happiness of all trans people.

Initiative 2: 3rd LGBTQ+ Service Providers’ Summit

Following the success of the first two LGBTQ+ Service Providers’ Summits, we are proud to announce that we are offering a 3rd two-day LGBTQ+ Service Provider Summit on January 20-21, 2017 in Montréal, Québec. The purpose of this summit is to gain more education on marginalization that is still affecting the LGBTQ+ folks we serve. We at the CCGSD also want to create space for LGBTQ+ service providers to network with people from across our nation, who are engaged in creating safe and inclusive spaces for LGBTQ+ folks. During our networking sessions we would like to start moving forward in the development of our National LGBTQ+ Service Provider Network.

We at the CCGSD want our work, as service providers, to be accessible, as well as recognized and funded for years to come. Our hope is to create a working group of people from across our nation, who wants to maintain and coordinate a working group to advocate, educate and share resources so that we, as organizations, can better serve the LGBTQ+ community.

RSVP your spot by emailing: conferences@ccgsd-ccdgs.org

Summit & Network Survey in Collaboration with Carleton University.

To make the Summit a success, we at the CCGSD wants to hear from you. In collaboration with Carleton University, we have created a survey that explores what your agency wants from the Summit, and how you see us all working together in a national way. We have created an online survey to gain perspective on what will best serve our nation of service providers.

This survey will take 10-15 minutes to complete and will be analyzed by the CCGSD to help us start developing and organizing the network. Your opinions matter to us and we thank you for your continued partnership and support.

The survey can be found here: http://goo.gl/forms/gEM5LY2Sk4AYC2Nr2
